El giro del sujetoThe turn to the subject

Pasa a ser qué puedo conocer yo.The first question ceases to be what there is in the world. It becomes what I can know.
The starting point is no longer the world or God. It is the one asking.
Dudar hasta tocar fondoDoubting down to bedrock
The Reformation has broken the common standard in religion. The telescope contradicts the senses. Montaigne has made scepticism fashionable. In that climate Descartes decides in the Meditations (1641) to doubt everything that can be doubted: the senses, the body, even mathematics. The only thing that holds is the very fact of doubting. There is an I that thinks, and everything else must be rebuilt from it.
A century and a half later Kant completes the movement. Until now, he writes, it was assumed that knowledge must conform to objects. He proposes trying the opposite, as Copernicus did when he stopped making the stars revolve around the spectator.
Antes: primero el serBefore: being first
First philosophy is metaphysics: what there is and how it is ordered. To know is to receive in the mind the form of things. The human being occupies a place within an order he did not set, and the question of knowledge comes afterwards, almost as a formality.
Before speaking of the world one must examine the instrument. Descartes seeks certainty in consciousness. Locke takes stock of what the mind can reach. Hume shows it is less than expected. Kant concludes that the subject does not mirror the world: it organises it with forms it brings along.
Después: el individuo como fundamentoAfter: the individual as foundation
If certainty begins in each consciousness, so does authority. The moral law is the one each person's reason gives itself. Legitimate power is the one individuals consent to. Problems also appear that did not exist before: how I know there is a world outside my mind, and how that mind is joined to a body.
The same two points, described from one or from the other. What changes is where the centre is placed.
«Pienso, luego existo»“I think, therefore I am”
The formula appears in the Discourse on Method (1637), in French: je pense, donc je suis. It is probably the most quoted sentence in philosophy. With it the first secure truth ceases to be a claim about God or nature and becomes something each person verifies in himself.
In the same years and the same country where Descartes lives, Rembrandt paints himself some eighty times, from ambitious youth to ruined old man. No one had done it so insistently. The inner life of an ordinary person becomes a subject worth studying.
Derechos del hombre, 1789Rights of man, 1789
The French Declaration states that men are born free and equal in rights. The bearer of those rights is not an estate, a guild or a city. It is the individual, prior to any belonging. Politics is built from the same point Descartes started from.

El yo ya había sido vistoThe self had been sighted before
Agustín escribió doce siglos antes: «Si me engaño, existo». Augustine wrote twelve centuries earlier: “If I am mistaken, I exist.” And the Persian Avicenna proposed in the 11th century a thought experiment: imagine a man created all at once, floating in the void, seeing and touching nothing, not even his own body. He would still affirm that he exists.
In India, the Buddhists Dignāga and Dharmakīrti had made the theory of knowledge the centre of philosophy between the 5th and 7th centuries. What was distinctive of modern Europe was not discovering the self, but making it the foundation of the whole building, the political one included.
No fue subjetivismoIt was not subjectivism
Starting from the subject is not saying everyone has their own truth. Descartes and Kant seek the opposite: conditions of knowledge that are the same for any rational being.
Russell bromeó con que debería llamarse «contrarrevolución ptolemaica».Copernicus removed the human being from the centre of the universe. Kant puts him at the centre of knowledge. Russell joked that it should be called a “Ptolemaic counter-revolution”.
El sujeto no es la persona concretaThe subject is not the concrete person
The “I think” has no age, body, language or biography. It is a function: what there must be for there to be knowledge. That abstraction was its strength and will be the target of the turns that follow.
Let us then try whether we do not make better progress in the problems of metaphysics by assuming that objects must conform to our knowledge.Immanuel Kant · Crítica de la razón pura, prólogo a la segunda edición (1787), B XVIImmanuel Kant · Critique of Pure Reason, preface to the second edition (1787), B xvi
Kant has just compared his proposal with that of Copernicus. He presents it as a hypothesis, a trial. If space, time and causality are forms the subject supplies, it becomes clear how we can know something of the world with certainty before observing it. The price is that we know things only as they appear to us.

If the only sure thing is my consciousness, getting out of it is hard. Princess Elisabeth of Bohemia asked Descartes in 1643 how something without extension can move a body, and got no satisfying answer. Nor is it clear how I know that others have minds. And that subject with no body or history looked a great deal like a European male.

En tu cerebro y en tu firmaIn your brain and in your signature
Neuroscience describes perception as an active construction by the brain, an experimental version of Kant's thesis. And every time you sign an informed consent form or claim your privacy, you act as the autonomous individual this turn placed at the centre.
